Jeffrey Sallee

I think you've misread your history. Neither Senators nor congress people pay into or receive SS benefits. Railroad people have their own retirement benefits and somewhere in Texas they voted to stay out of SS. All of these groups are doing extremely well with their own benefit programs. However, robbing from SS to pay for Social programs has been going on for a very long time. I think it was started by the Johnson Administration. They put IOU's into the pot and guess who has to pay it back.......you can guess, can't you? At the same time, the baby boomers (a large group of people) were paying into the system while a smaller group was using the benefits (our parents). Now, however, the baby boomers are starting to retire and the age of death has increase so fewer people are dying before they can receive benefits. Gov't has always counted on people dying before they could draw benefits. And they keep increasing the age at which you can apply for benefits in the hope you'll permanently go away. With the money Congress took out and the money the boomers are receiving, it's no wonder there won't be enough for the next group to draw upon.
The Republicans have tried to tell people that you can do better than SS by investing your money into other options. That scares the Democrats who still use this fund to pay for all the give aways they come up with. So maybe, you need to rethink your position or at least read up on you government.

Stephen Lanning

What history are you studying? The Social Security system hasn't been changed in 25 years. That was in 1983 under Ronald Reagan (a Republican). In fact, the changes made under his watch (and under Jimmy Carter - a Dem - in 1977) allowed Social Security to remain in existence TO THIS DAY without going broke.

If you think that President George W. Bush was the only guy to propose changes to Social Security, you are obviously unaware that former President William Jefferson Clinton (a Democrat) also proposed changes to the system during the 1990's. At least they made the attempt, even though it is political *******.

In the end, both parties are afraid to tinker with it because senior citizens are one of the most important groups of people in the country, and they vote in greater numbers than any other age group.

The thing is, more in-fighting and bickering only makes the problem worse. This article on Social Security and Medicare came out just this very day:

Medicare is a much bigger problem right now when compared to Social Security.

Instead of making unfounded and outrageous claims, do some research and become informed.

Who knows, maybe you'll be the genius who figures out how to solve the problem without pissing anybody off... Good luck.

They don't have to mess it up. Its nothing more than a ponzi scam. Don't take my word for it. Do your own research, there is no, I repeat no, trust fund. Social security benefits are paid from current tax receipts. Although on the books it will be in the black for years, shortly the cash flow will be negative, which means either benefits will have to be reduced or taxes increased. Its a fact.

Lula Tracy

Simple politics. FDR- the great liberal started this program. Every Con since then has wanted to be the one to end or change this hugely successful program. Bush thought he could use his "political capital" as he called it to initiate the end of Social Security as we knew it. Thankfully, he was wrong.

Instead of just spouting off liberal talking points, how about citing an actual example of what you're accusing them of doing?
